THE FAB 5
Clothes that should live in every woman’s closet.

InStyle Magazine ~ Fall Makeover Issue
Your closet is clean; now get your wardrobe in order
with some essential but versatile pieces. Julie Watson,
a personal shopper in Chicago, makes her picks.

1.LITTLE BLACK DRESS
Dress it up or down-play to any occasion by adding accessories or layered pieces to a sleeveless shift or sheath with minimal detail (no ruching or pleats).

2.CARDIGAN
Choose a neutral color (black, navy or brown) in one-to two-ply cashmere or light weight merino wool. It can be used in lieu of a blazer for a work-appropriate look or as a layering piece with jeans and a t-shirt.

3.WHITE BUTTON-FRONT SHIRT
Good construction and fit are key. A boxy top looks boyish, so pick one with darts or a princess seams and a sateen finish with a bit of stretch. The buttons should never bulge or gap.

4.JEANS
The most versatile denim can effortlessly move from office to evening. It must be a dark wash, and the fewer details the better: no whiskering, abrasions, or ornate pocket elements.

5.BLACK SUIT
Look for a season-spanning fabric, such as lightweight Italian wool, that can be punched up with a colored blouse and jewelry. Trousers and a jacket are great to start with, but try a suit system (skirt and dress included) if you’re budget allows.
