Looking hotter is a common New Year’s resolution for people, but this year, saving money is at the top of the list, too, and it may seem painfully hard to swing both. While I won’t address the issue of exercise (no one hates the gym more than I), I can suggest ways to update your look for ’09 without throwing down money on an entire new wardrobe. With help from wardrobe consultant and personal shopper Julie Watson, here are nine new trends you can fold into your wardrobe for under $100:
HEAVY METAL ACCESSORIES: Try metal accents-in jewelry or shoes-for a nice contrast with a feminine dress. Big necklaces are works of art this year. Gold, silver, copper-doesn’t make a difference. Anything goes.
DRAMATIC CUFFS: You don’t have to stop at one, throw two or three on the same arm for a layered look.
HEDBAND DETAIL: If Serena from "Gossip Girl" hated Blair’s simple little headbands, she’ll loathe these. Try bands with ruffles, feathers and 1940’s-style netting.
THE CARROT PANT: This bad boy, looser around the hips, tapered down to the ankle-is another ‘80’s flashback. "It’s more flattering than a lot of people think, " says Watson.
YUMMIE TUMMIE: A beautiful blend of style and function, this meant-to-be-seen shape wear (tops and slip dresses with different necklines, sleeves and embellishments) clings comfortably to curves yet obscures bulges. And the long size artfully provides cover in the back.
BAGGY BLAZER: Think Annie Potts’ character in "Pretty In Pink." Or if you’re too young for that try Lauren from "The Hills." This jacket-which is looser, longer and worn with sleeves rolled up-looks great over dresses and lacy tanks.
THE BOYFRIEND JEAN A cousin of the carrot pant, this boyfriend jean is "kind of worn looser and lover on the hip. Crotch is hanging down lower," says Watson. The jean is tapered and slim thru the ankle and is rolled and cuffed. Abrasions, holes on denim are coming back as well. Watson suggests pairing them with an ankle boot.
GRAPHIC BLACK AND WHITE PRINTS: Be a billboard for prints, words and more fun. Circles and stripes will be popular this year as well.
LONG CARDIGAN: "If you can’t afford the price point of a jacket, try a cardigan with a longer length (as an alternative)," says Watson.
