{Style} Power Shopping

The mission: to find spring’s most compelling trends in one place-without having to repark the car. We checked every item off our list at the 900 North Michigan Shops, a one-stop destination for high-end shopping that has finally found its groove.

{The Trend} Color Combos

Julie Watson, wardrobe consultant and personal shopper who opened an outpost in the 900 North Michigan Shops in October, makes sense of spring 2011 color mania. Level 5, 312-475-0047, juliewatsonstyle.com

1. Troll for rich hues of red, purple, blue, and green. “If you’re not bold enough to wear color in a head-to-toe suited look like Gucci is showing, opt for a great dress or show your splash of color in a top paired with your favorite trouser,” says Watson. Scared? Go for an accessory. “A bold sandal, belt, or bag is always a great choice.”

2. Choose neon wisely. Also big for spring are neons such as pink, tangerine, and citrus yellow, some of which Michael Kors played with in his spring collection. Watson says, “Tread lightly, as these optic colors can be a bit trickier to wear-it’s always wise to pair them with a calming and balancing neautral, like stone, white, or army green, to ensure the color play remains elevated and sophisticated. Neon on neon is a no-no.”

3. Color mixing and color blocking are major themes. The adventurous can opt for print-on-print options. Otherwise, try mixing within a color family. “Ranges of colors look really fresh together-pairing varied tones of the same color family is super-chic, and for the more adventurous, there’s a lot of mixing ‘juxtaposing’ color,” Watson suggests.

4. White, white, white. Offsetting all of the bright, rich tones for spring is an abundance of white, even white on white. (Watson says to think Bianca Jagger’s white suit from the 1970s.) If an all-white look is too much, pick up a great “statement” item such as a blazer or a pair of trousers or jeans-a soothing compliment to all of the color you’ll be seeing in tops.

5. Don’t fear stripes. Watson’s no-fail tip: “Narrow stripes are the best choice for those who are afraid that stripes will add ‘horizontal bulk.’ “

Love it! Although to be fair, when am I NOT thinking of Bianca Jagger’s white suit from the 1970s?
